Come Birdwatching in Beautiful Estonia

Estonia is one of the newest and smallest members of the European Union. Within an area of 45,200 square kilometers, approximately 1.5 million people live, mainly centred around the larger towns of Tallinn, Tartu , Narva and Parnu. Estonia has the lowest population density of any country in Europe which means there are many wide open spaces. The land has not been intensively farmed and this means wild plants and insects are varied and abundant. There are many forests, rivers, lakes, marshes and peat bogs. The long coast is highly indented with many bays and promontories and Estonia has over 1000 islands. These are habitats for thousands of migrating and breeding birds as well as indigenous mammals.

Estonia is on the migration path for millions of passerines flying through central Estonia as well as over 50 million waterfowl and shorebirds flying along the north-western coast. More than 330 species have been identified in Estonia, of which more than 220 are breeding birds. In 1999, Estonia held the European record for the highest number of species seen in a day - an incredible 189.

Estonia is a great place for birders.
